Williams junior Luke Browning topped the morning at the F1 post-season test at the Yas Marina Circuit, going 1.3 seconds faster than Aston Martin's Jak Crawford.
Newly-crowned drivers' champion Lando Norris was the quickest of the regular drivers, in fifth.
The Briton was just ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, the second Williams of Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson in the Racing Bulls machine.
Ryo Hirakawa crashed his Haas during the opening four-and-a-half hours of running at the home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Alex Albon, Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon, Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri were the only five of the registered 25 drivers not to put a time on the board at the halfway stage of the test.
