Charles Leclerc secured a shock pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix after setting a 1m 15.372.
McLaren had been clear favourites, but Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris could only manage second and third. George Russell and Fernando Alonso completed the top five.
It was a disastrous qualifying for Lewis Hamilton, who suffered another poor qualifying. The Briton was eliminated in Q2, as was Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli.
Yuki Tsunoda also endured a qualifying to forget, following a fourth Q1 exit in the last eight races; however, he was just 0.163s slower than Max Verstappen in the first part of qualifying.
