Oscar Piastri topped the first free practice session for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, beating Lando Norris by +0.032.
Williams driver Carlos Sainz rounded out the top three places, whilst George Russell and Lewis Hamilton completed the top five.
It was a strong opening hour of running for Pierre Gasly to start the weekend at Imola, putting his Alpine sixth fastest.
Franco Colapinto, competing in his first weekend since replacing Jack Doohan in Team Enstone's second car, was P17.
There was a considerable amount of soft-tyre running, as teams sought to learn about the new C6 Pirelli compound being introduced in Italy.
Gabriel Bortoleto triggered a late red flag, with under three minutes left to go, meaning the session was not resumed.
