Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Miami Grand Prix to become the first driver to take pole in the opening six rounds of the F1 season since Alain Prost in 1993.

The Dutchman beat Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who will line up second and third respectively for the race at the Miami International Autodrome tomorrow.

Sergio Perez could only set the fourth-fastest time, with the McLarens and Mercedes to line up two-by-two. Nico Hulkenberg qualified ninth and Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top 10.

Fernando Alonso was the surprise omission from Q3. He went early in the middle session and it did not pay off. He will start the grand prix from P15. Team-mate Lance Stroll also failed to get through.

Daniel Ricciardo, the star of the sunshine state so far this weekend, could not carry on his fine Miami form, having to settle for P18 after being eliminated in Q1. However, that will become last place after his Chinese Grand Prix penalty, a three-place grid drop, is applied.
