With just one practice session for the 20 F1 drivers to become accustomed to a newly resurfaced Interlagos circuit given it is a sprint weekend in São Paulo, the action was fast and furious over the 60 minutes of track running.
And it was Lando Norris who led the way in his McLaren, spearheading a British one-two-three ahead of Mercedes' George Russell and a remarkable lap from Ollie Bearman, standing in for an unwell Kevin Magnussen for sprint qualifying and the sprint itself, who was third fastest in his Haas.
Max Verstappen was a lowly 15th, albeit the Red Bull driver backing out in the final sector on his soft-tyre burst. His time in the first two sectors, however, would not have been good enough for the best time.
