Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has criticised “idiot” fans who theorise the team is purposely sabotaging Lewis Hamilton's car.

Hamilton has endured a difficult campaign at the Brackley-based squad, his final with the team ahead of his switch to Ferrari.

Following a strong showing in Las Vegas, a disastrous round followed in Qatar. Hamilton was penalised for jumping the start and for speeding the pit lane, while he also suffered a costly puncture.

It left the seven-time world champion crossing the line in 12th place - the lowest position he has seen the chequered flag since the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

When it was put to Wolff that fans on social media have been suggesting internal sabotage, the Austrian told media including RacingNews365: “I’ve never read the comments.

“I just hear that nonsense appears. We can talk at length about the toxic environment of social media that I’ve always said, you hide yourself behind the screen, you open up an account and then you put these comments.

“I wonder who would even have the time to comment?”

Wolff warns 'nobody is reading what you write'

Hamilton is preparing for his final race in Mercedes colours this weekend in Abu Dhabi, which will close the curtain on the historic 11-year partnership.

Wolff commended a portion of the Mercedes fans who continue to support the team through its difficult period - but highlighted those who make conspiracy comments have no idea of Mercedes' operations.

“We love our fans. They contribute to what we are and the other ones who believe that they need to create some crazy, made-up conspiracies, it doesn’t even bother me.

“They’re just idiots that have no understanding. They probably never stepped foot in a racing car, never mind a normal car.

“You need to show me some of that stuff just for me to have a laugh.

“A message to the ones that feel free to give us the comments - nobody is reading what you write.”
