Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has defended Christian Horner after he was subject to booing at the F1 75 event earlier this month.

Each F1 team presented their new liveries at the O2 Arena in London to kick off the new season in which the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

However, Horner was subject to notable boos as he took to the stage to introduce the car and his drivers to the stage.

The FIA has condemned the booing directed at the Red Bull team principal, with Wolff also moving to criticise the reception Horner received.

“We were all surprised about the amount of booing that happened, particularly to one individual,” Wolff told media including RacingNews365.

“There wasn’t any booing, really, for Max.

“That coming in was a consequence of what happened before. But that was big and bad and came as a surprise to everyone.

“It’s his home turf, but still, Christian got these boos. Boos shouldn't be in the sport, but in my opinion, that wasn't directed to Max.”

The boos were a major talking point following the event as the crowd also appeared to jeer the FIA when it was mentioned during the event.

However, Wolff labelled the launch as a success and is hopeful to see it take place again in the future.

“We didn't know what to expect from the event and it was very good,” Wolff said.

“Also the job that some of the smaller teams did in terms of marketing at the launch was exceptional.

“Everything was immaculate. The organisation was really good. It was a top event for our sponsors who really enjoyed it.

“That's the feedback we got, and we need to applaud F1 for what they did. I'm sure this format is going to expand in the next few years, maybe to different places and that's exceptional.”
