Williams declare 'open-minded' process behind F1 driver decision

Williams has a vacancy at the team next year with the second drive at the team alongside Alex Albon yet to be confirmed.

Williams team principal James Vowles has declared he is keeping an “open-minded” policy to his driver line-up decision for next season. The Grove-based squad has signed Alex Albon to a multi-year extension but is yet to confirm his team-mate for the 2025 campaign. Logan Sargeant currently occupies the seat - however it is widely expected the American will not be retained as he endures another difficult campaign. Names such as Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas have been linked to the drive, but Vowles highlighted his primary focus is to improve the car going forward. “We're continually evaluating it,” Vowles told media including RacingNews365 .  “What we've said to Logan is it's a meritocracy. You have to make sure you earn your place in the sport continuously. That's been the same message that has been for 18 months really for him. And we are open-minded to things.  “What I've said before and I've maintained today, is that our car, and this is a responsibility on my shoulders and the team, isn't quick enough.  “It's not a driver issue we suffer from today. We've simply been out-developed and we have to make sure we accelerate that process.”

Rookie FP1 outing 'a reward' for F2 season

Williams fielded a rookie driver during the first free practice session in Silverstone last weekend, with Formula 2 driver Franco Colapinto jumping behind the wheel. Vowles asserted it was simply a reward for his F2 campaign so far, rather than a test to see how he performs in an F1 environment. “It was sort of a reward for a very strong Formula 2 season,” Vowles said. “I like recognising that we have a strong young driver programme.  “We invested in Logan and we'll continue to invest in our young driver programme, simple as that.  “It's expanding quite significantly in the background. And today wasn't a showcase or demonstration or a test.  “It was simply a reward for a good progression. And we have to do two FP1s in the season. It's sensible to do it here at Silverstone.”
