The 2024 F1 season saw seven drivers clinch a grand prix victory on multiple occasions, meaning it was an all-time competitive year for the championship.

Whilst drivers' title winner Max Verstappen visited the top step of the podium more times than anyone else, Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez was the only driver from the top four teams not secure a win - let alone at least two.

Each of the other three outfits from that leading quartet had driver line-ups that both claimed more than just a solitary victory, with McLaren achieving six to Ferrari's five and Mercedes' four.

In two of those three squads, there was a clear 'number one' driver. Lando Norris at the Woking-based team and Charles Leclerc for the Scuderia - in part established by the Maranello squad opting to replace Carlos Sainz at the end of the campaign.

Although Lewis Hamilton would - under usual circumstances - be considered the lead driver in Brackley, his decision to replace the aforementioned Spaniard, and the fact he fell short to George Russell in the championship standings, somewhat muddies the water there.

Further still, the two British drivers have proven to be a fairly equal partnership in their three seasons together, save any caveats about set-up experimentation and so forth.

This was underlined by Hamilton's pass on Russell on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix sealing the aggregate points lead between the duo as team-mates.

Nevertheless, Oscar Piastri, Sainz and the two Mercedes drivers all showed strong, race-winning form at points, making it difficult to clearly judge which so-called 'second driver' had the best 2024 F1 season.
