McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has implored his squad to "remain grounded" after it started the 2025 F1 season in the same imperious form it ended the previous campaign.

The Woking-based team won its first constructors' crown in 26 years last term and is the favourite to clinch the title again this year.

It has not won back-to-back championships since 1991, when three-time champion Ayrton Senna was still racing for the papaya outfit.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri comfortably locked out the front row at Albert Park, with the former prevailing in treacherous conditions to claim victory in the race.

However, Stella is staying cautious, suggesting rival F1 teams have yet to truly show their hand at this early stage of the season.

"The team have built a quick car, which has given us a competitive start to the season," the Italian said of the Australian Grand Prix.

"Both Lando and Oscar performed excellently in Melbourne, but we must remain grounded and continue to learn as we haven’t seen everything our competitors have to offer.”

Double-edged sword

The F1 paddock immediately heads to Shanghai for the second round - and the first sprint event of the year.

Stella highlighted the double-edged sword awaiting McLaren, and the rest of the field, in the Asian country.

"We now immediately shift focus to the Chinese Grand Prix," the 53-year-old remarked ahead of the weekend.

"As the first sprint event of 2025, we know it offers more opportunity to score points, but it also provides the challenge of trying to maximise our learnings in the new car with reduced practice time."
