Sebastian Vettel was "coming alive" in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying, as he will line up ninth for his final ever Formula 1 race. Four-time World Champion Vettel escaped Q1 in the dying stages at the Yas Marina Circuit and was able to advance through to Q3. Using only one set of new Soft tyres, Vettel's effort was quick enough for seventh, but was later shuffled down to P9. He will start alongside old rival Fernando Alonso after Daniel Ricciardo's grid penalty has been applied.
Vettel on final qualifying
"I think it was coming alive, I felt really comfortable at the end of Q1 and Q2," Vettel explained to Sky Sports F1. "I would have liked another set [of tyres] in Q3, but all in all, it was a good session for us and we could qualify the car in a decent spot. "It was a bit emotional before qualifying, but we will try to score as many points to beat Alfa Romeo to sixth in the Constructors'." Aston Martin have 50 points and are seventh in the standings, five points behind Alfa Romeo, with both green cars out-qualifying the Alfas of Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas.
