Max Verstappen

Verstappen starting number choice formally announced

Although anticipated, Max Verstappen will definitely continue to adorn his Red Bull with the number one next season, as he previously indicated he would do for each drivers' championship defence he contests.

Max Verstappen will continue to race under the number one next season, having secured his fourth-consecutive F1 drivers' title.

It was already expected the Dutchman would retain the champion-reserved number, but the official 2025 F1 entry has removed any doubt.

The 27-year-old's chosen race number is 33, but under the existing F1 rules it is the drivers' title winner's discretion as to which they use to defend the crown.

The current system was introduced in 2014 and Verstappen is the first to adorn the number 1 on his car since Sebastian Vettel did in that first year. He would take on number five the following campaign.

Incoming Stake driver Gabriel Bortoleto has since adopted that number for his rookie season, something that has caused a backlash from Vettel fans online who are seemingly displeased after the two-year holding period on the number lapsed.

Lewis Hamilton, who has won six drivers' championships since that point, opted to stick with his number 44 for each of his title defences.

His former Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg did not attempt to retain his title, instead retiring from F1 in the days that followed his 2016 success.
