Max Verstappen has revealed that he did speak with Mercedes, in what he described as an "honest" conversation.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff highlighted how he would like to work with Verstappen several times this year, with the Dutchman acknowledging that talks did happen.
However, in the Red Bull driver's eyes, it has never been anything concrete, yet he recognises why Mercedes are eager for his signature.
"I understand that too," Verstappen told Viaplay. "You want to have the fastest driver in your car.
"With them, of course, there was also a lot at play and they had to make a choice for a new driver."
The Verstappen to Mercedes rumours were largely triggered by Lewis Hamilton's exit and the issues within the Red Bull camp, as well as the concerns around the Milton Keynes-based team's power unit for the 2026 F1 regulations.
However, leaving Red Bull, a team he views as a family to him, is a decision he will not make overnight, despite Mercedes being an interesting option.
"The big teams are always interesting, but on the other hand I am also with a very big team," added Verstappen.
"I have achieved a lot of success with them and it just feels like a second family. You can't make the considerations to leave very quickly.
"It's not like I wake up and I say, yes, next year it's done. I'm not someone who shoots from left to right very quickly anyway.
"So you have to think about that kind of thing very carefully, if you want to do that."

Verstappen 'open' with Mercedes
Whilst Verstappen has held conversations with Red Bull's rival, he is quick to note it has been nothing concrete.
The 27-year-old does not view speaking to Mercedes on a regular basis as a problem, given how happy he is with Red Bull.
Verstappen is committed to Red Bull and does not see the positives in leaving the Austrian outfit, with himself and Mercedes both being clear with each other.
"Not really, actually," conceded Verstappen. "Of course we always talk to each other and I'm not lying about the fact that we've been sitting together.
"But that in itself is not a problem either, I think. But I still just really like where I'm sitting. I think we had a very constructive conversation. And I think everyone has always been very honest and open with each other.
"But on the other hand, I'm also very loyal to my own team and I just feel at home there. Then there's really not a whole lot to be gained at the moment."
