Vasseur rules out using controversial Ferrari F1 tactic

New team boss Frederic Vasseur says he would not use the controversial tool "in the short term."

New Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur has ruled out using the team's controversial Formula 1 veto - in the "short term." Ferrari kept their veto when the latest Concorde Agreement was agreed in 2019, which came into force in 2021. The controversial check over the rules allow Ferrari to block any regulation change that it feels is not in their, or F1's best interests. In place since the 1980s, Ferrari used the veto in 2015 to block a proposal to cap customer power unit costs to $12 million. And Vasseur is confident that it won't be triggered again "in the short term."

"It's a team representative and an F1 Commission representative on the World [Motorsport] Council, it means that I'm not voting for Ferrari," Vasseur told media when asked by RacingNews365 about his new position after a meeting of the F1 Commission in Bahrain. "I'm supposed to vote in function of the decisions of the teams, this is crystal clear for. "The [F1 Commission meeting] was quite smooth and we'll have a debrief about it. "The power of the veto, I think Ferrari have never used it in the past because the level of work done at the F1 Commission - even if sometimes we are not on the same page and are fighting each other. "But I think the quality of the job done at the F1 Commission level is very good and when we are bringing something [forward], the next step I think is quite finalised. "I mean that honestly, I don't see where we could use [the veto] in the short term."
