Nico Hulkenberg has been called to see the F1 stewards in Abu Dhabi after an alleged infringement of the regulations.
Hulkenberg starred in qualifying to end the session in fourth place.
It would mark his highest starting position with the Haas team, on his final weekend with the squad ahead of his switch to Haas next year.
However, the stewards have summoned the German over Article 12.2.1 i) of the International Sporting Code, which relates to overtaking in the pit lane.
A grid drop would be a blow to Haas as it targets overtaking Alpine in the constructors' championship for sixth place.
Hulkenberg will see the stewards at 19:50 local time.
The stewards ultimately decided to penalise Hulkenberg with a three-place grid drop, meaning he starts P7, and Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly and George Russell all shuffling forward one spot.
