Guenther Steiner has named the main quality in Nico Hulkenberg that "surprised" them since he joined the team. Hulkenberg returned to the F1 grid after being dropped by Renault at the end of the 2019 season, having spent 2020 to 2022 as a reserve driver Aston Martin. During that time he contested a few rounds which drivers had to miss due to COVID, with the German impressing with his ability to get up to speed quickly having spent time out. Hulkenberg was later brought in by Haas to replace Mick Schumacher, who failed to impress after multiple crashes and poor results during a deciding season with the American outfit in 2022.
Steiner: Hulkenberg quick on the ball
Steiner discussed this key attribute when speaking to media including RacingNews365 : "First of all, we were surprised with how quick he was on the ball and how quick he was integrated into the team. "It was quite amazing how he immediately understood. But again, he was doing this [F1] for a long time. But also how he goes about racing, he goes about the right way. "He puts the right effort in, not trying to overdo it, but he knows exactly what he needs to do. "With experience it's not chocolate, it's not sweet to make, it takes some time." Haas is currently in a battle with Williams over 7th place in the Constructors' Championship, with the pair currently level on points.
