Mercedes has a puzzle to solve should it sign Max Verstappen, in regard to which of its current drivers should it keep.
Both George Russell and Kimi Antonelli are in need of new contracts for 2026, meaning not both can be retained should Toto Wolff seal the signature of the four-time world champion.
However, former Haas F1 team principal Guenther Steiner has offered a suggestion on how Mercedes could sign Verstappen but also keep Russell and Antonelli.
Speaking on the Red Flags podcast, Steiner urged the Silver Arrows to loan Antonelli to a midfield team next season if Verstappen signs, so that the Dutchman can partner Russell.
Steiner believes Antonelli has struggled being thrown straight into the Mercedes F1 outfit at just 18 years old, and would gain valuable experience racing for a midfield squad.
It has been a very tricky few months for Antonelli, who has retired in four of the last six races. In addition, his only points in the last six races came in Canada where he claimed a podium.
Would a season in a midfield team improve his development?
