George Russell has revealed two senior Mercedes figures missed their flights home from Canada after Red Bull's "waste of time" protest.

Red Bull protested Russell's victory in Montreal for incidents behind the late safety car, alleging he drove in an unsportsmanlike manner and fell more than 10-car lengths behind the safety car.

Max Verstappen overtook Russell briefly after he braked, with the stewards summoning both drivers to investigate the incident.

Mercedes was represented by sporting director Ron Meadows and trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin, with the verdict coming nearly five hours after, with the stewards dismissing the protest.

As a result of this "waste of time" Russell has explained that Meadows and Shovlin missed their flights back to the UK.

"Max didn’t know there was a protest even going on," Russell told Sky Sports F1.

"So, I don’t know what was going on or what they were thinking. I’m glad nothing happened one way or another.

"It was just a bit of a waste of everybody’s time. Shov and Ron, who work with the team, both missed their flights, so it was just a bit of a faff for everybody.

"But it’s over now. Eyes forward."
