Lando Norris is not yet ready to be world champion in F1, according to ex-driver Ralf Schumacher.

The Briton is currently second in the drivers' championship, trailing standings leader Max Verstappen by 84 points.

Norris has enjoyed a strong campaign at McLaren and secured his maiden grand prix win earlier this year at the Miami Grand Prix.

The 24-year-old has come close to adding to his win tally on several occasions, with four second-place finishes to his name this year.

Last time out at the British Grand Prix, Norris was once again in the hunt for the win, which ultimately went the way of compatriot Lewis Hamilton.

Norris' race was undone by a decision to fit Soft tyres for the final stint, with Schumacher suggesting that “little mistakes keep creeping in” to his race craft.

McLaren should share responsiblity

However, Schumacher acknowledged that the McLaren team should share responsibility for the missed opportunity.

“As a driver, you usually go into the race and you already know exactly what a tyre is capable of,” he said. “The team knows that too.

“You have to give each other information. What happened? Someone drove into the pits earlier and does this and that with the tyres. And then as a driver, you can make the decision.

“Norris is not quite ready yet. But that could also be due to the structure within the team.

“It could be because his engineer is not strong enough. That's always a very important person.”
