A German court recently ruled in the extortion case involving the family of seven-time F1 drivers' champion Michael Schumacher.

Three suspects allegedly threatened to make photos of Schumacher public if their demand for 15 million euros was not met.

The former Jordan, Benetton, Ferrari and Mercedes F1 driver was seriously injured in a skiing accident in 2013 and has been kept out of publicity by his family ever since.

One suspect, Yilmaz T., received a three-year prison sentence, while his son, Daniel L., received a six-month suspended prison sentence. Markus F., the third suspect - a former security guard of the Schumacher family - was given a suspended two-year prison sentence.

The family, however, has now announced it will lodge an appeal against Markus F., believing the sentence to be far too lenient.

Corinna Schumacher, Michael's wife, shared the following statement: "We have appealed against what we consider to be the far too lenient sentence for Mr F. In my opinion, he was the mastermind behind this.

"What still shocks me most is the massive breach of trust. He should receive a punishment that deters any potential copycats."
