George Russell has declared he is “riding a wave” after taking his third career pole position at the Silverstone Circuit.
Russell set the fastest lap during Q3 for the British Grand Prix, besting team-mate Lewis Hamilton to the top spot by almost two-tenths of a second.
Mercedes endured a difficult start to the year but has improved its form of late, slotting itself into contention at recent events.
Russell's pole on home soil comes less than a week after he won Mercedes' first race of the season in Austria.
“What a feeling,” Russell said. “At the start of this year, I don't think we could have even dreamt of being on pole here.
“A one-two for us, Lando [Norris] in P3, it's obviously just mega.”
“The car at the moment is feeling so, so good. It really came alive in qualifying and honestly, what a joy to drive around this circuit.
“We're riding this wave at the moment, absolutely buzzing.”
However, Russell conceded it will be a difficult race on Sunday with the McLarens and Max Verstappen looking to pounce.
“But eyes are on Sunday. We've got a race to win and it's going to be tight with Lando, Max is going to be fast as well. But I'm so excited right now.
“The crowd gave us so much energy, the three of us. I don't think Silverstone could have dreamt of three Brits in the top three.”
