George Russell has praised the work contribution made by Mick Schumacher in his short time as reserve driver, and believes he can return to a full-time Formula 1 drive. Schumacher's career as a full-time driver was paused after his dismissal from the Haas team at the end of 2022, who elected to give their second race seat to Nico Hulkenberg for 2023. With no race seat for 2023, Schumacher took up a reserve driver role with Mercedes, and has been completing various simulator sessions with the team, and was present during their preseason testing schedule.
When asked about the impact made by Schumacher at Mercedes, Russell explained that the German driver had been a "real benefit" to the team, and backed the 2020 Formula 2 champion for an F1 return. "Obviously it's early days, but Mick’s really integrating well into the team. He's really willing, he's helping wherever possible," Russell told media, including RacingNews365.com . "He was out on track quite a lot [during testing], just watching and analysing how the cars seemed off track and feeding that back into engineers and doing the necessary work in the simulator. So, he's been a real benefit, a real help to us. "I hope he gets his chance back in Formula 1 next year, but if he keeps on putting in the work, he will get that opportunity again, for sure.
