Rosberg ready to rekindle Hamilton rivalry

The two former teammates had a fierce rivalry driving for Mercedes before Rosberg’s unexpected retirement after winning the 2016 world championship. But the competitive spark never seems to have left the German driver.

From 2013 to 2016, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton were F1 teammates at Mercedes, and the two enjoyed a strong rivalry with one another before the German unexpectedly bowed out of the sport after winning the world championship in 2016. Now, five years after that competitive season, the two rivals are set to line up against each other again- this time, as team owners in the Extreme E off-road electric racing series. The pair share a passion for sustainability, and will enter their X44 and Rosberg X Racing teams in the inaugural Extreme E season which kicks off in two weeks time in Saudi Arabia. "We did not know that each other would be working on this project, it was very strange. We even negotiated with the organization on the same day, weird eh?," Rosberg said in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport. "But it is great that we are both committed to a cleaner future." While their goals might be larger than just defeating each other in the racing, that doesn’t mean that Rosberg has forgotten the rivalry. "There is already a nice rivalry. We both don't want to be second and that means that a great fight will arise", he said. However, there is no chance of seeing him get behind the wheel once more unfortunately. "No, let me be the team boss," Rosberg said.
