Ricciardo reacts amid rumours of Red Bull reserve driver role

With Daniel Ricciardo ruling out the possibility of being on the F1 grid in 2023, a reserve driver role looks to be a viable option for the Australian. Could this see him make a return to Red Bull?

Daniel Ricciardo has given an update on his 2023 plans following rumours of a return to Red Bull in a reserve driver role. During coverage of Saturday's qualifying session at the United States Grand Prix – in which Ricciardo failed to make it out of Q1 – Sky Sports F1 reporter Ted Kravitz spoke of "good news" for the Australian's fans. Kravitz suggested that Ricciardo had secured a reserve driver position for 2023, and hinted that the team in question is Red Bull, where Ricciardo raced between 2014 and 2018. However, according to Ricciardo, nothing has yet been signed.

Ricciardo reacts to reserve driver rumours

After qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas, Ricciardo was asked about reports emerging of him having obtained a reserve driver position, though Red Bull were not named in the question. The McLaren driver denied that any deal has been agreed. "I don't [have a deal lined up]," Ricciardo told media, including RacingNews365.com . "So, for now, everything's just rumours. Am I talking? Yes, but there's [been] no pen on paper or anything like that yet."

Ricciardo focused on 'ambitions' for 2024

Whilst not giving anything away about what might be in store for 2023, Ricciardo reiterated his desire to stick to a "plan" in order to boost his prospects of returning to the grid in 2024. "I won't be racing on the grid [in 2023]," the 33-year-old said. "I will still be around, because I still have ambitions for 2024, so I won't completely disconnect from the sport. "But obviously nothing's guaranteed for '24. I don't have a seat that I can say I'm going to definitely be driving, but I'll still be around and trying to put work in to be back. "I'm aware that nothing's guaranteed beyond next year, but – with what's currently available – I feel like I'm better off sticking to the plan I have and aiming for something else."
