McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo had a great start to 2021 as the Australian topped the timing sheet of the first test session in Bahrain. The Australian who is using Mercedes power for the first time in his career, set a time of 1.32.203 seconds meaning he finished the first session of the 2021 F1 season in first and was undoubtedly delighted. "Yes, that was good," Ricciardo told RacingNews365.com among other members of the press. "Of course we don't know what the benchmark is yet. We have to wait a little longer, probably until Q3 in a couple of weeks. But everything went smooth this morning. So all good and happy." Ricciardo also cited how the conditions might mitigate the car's performance, especially given that the race will occur at dusk rather than in the morning like it did today. "You know it was warm, windy, and pretty sandy out there so the track was tricky to navigate. But it's just a good feeling to be back on track for sure." Lando Norris will take over McLaren's testing duties for the afternoon session scheduled later on Friday.
