Ricciardo jokes: Norris contract a massive surprise

McLaren Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo has joked that he was surprised by Lando Norris' contract renewal while sharing his thoughts on what it's like having the British driver as a teammate.

Australian Formula 1 star Daniel Ricciardo jokes that he was massively surprised with Lando Norris' new contract with McLaren while explaining what the young Englishman brings to the team. On the eve of the Monaco Grand Prix, Norris, who is still only 21, renewed his contract with McLaren thus extending his stay with the British team for another two seasons. The decision should benefit both parties as the English driver has steadily improved over his three seasons in the sport. His teammate Ricciardo was left unsurprised by the decision. "I was gonna joke and be like, it was a massive surprise but no it was I think expected," Ricciardo told select members of the press including RacingNews365.com . "It's good for us as a team, Lando (Norris) started the season really strong and obviously got the podium in Imola, I think the team is really happy with him and what he's doing. Obviously with us locked in for the future, it's just all eyes forward." Ricciardo also went on to elaborate on what it was like working with the young British driver and how he has grown over the past few seasons. "I wasn't his teammate last year, so it's only whatever speculation, but hopefully he stepped up a bit this year," Ricciardo continued. "He is certainly quick, he seems to be obviously driving very well and he's comfortable and I think he's at that point now, where it's his third year in F1, third year with the team and that's where I think you really start to hit your hit your marks so to speak." With McLaren set for continuity during the coming seasons, things certainly do look promising for the Woking-based squad. In Norris and Ricciardo the team has one of the most exciting line-ups on the grid and the expectation would be for them to make significant progress from a development standpoint once the technical overhaul comes into effect in 2022.
