Ricciardo: A good start to my McLaren adventure

A beaming Daniel Ricciardo has promised he has more speed to come, after qualifying in sixth place for the opening race of the year.

McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo is pleased with how his career with his new team has started, after claiming sixth place in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Australian driver set a 1:29.927 on the soft tyres to pip Lando Norris by just 0.047, with Norris in seventh position on the softs. Both will start Sunday's race on that compound. A beaming Ricciardo said he's starting to feel the MCL35M coming to him, as he puts in more laps in his new car after switching from Renault at the end of last season. "It was a good, definitely a good evening," Ricciardo told RacingNews365.com and others at the end of qualifying. "I certainly wasn't on the pace yesterday, but I know that it's just gonna take time and I think the more laps I do, the more I'll feel the car and the limit, and I know I'm experienced in the sport but truth is it does, it does take time and it will take time to get that last few percent. "I certainly got closer to it tonight and for that, I'm happy. I think it's a good start to the McLaren adventure." Asked about what the response from McLaren's 'big dogs' has been to his and Norris' performance in qualifying, Ricciardo said: "I got a thumbs up!" "They've obviously seen from day one of testing with me in the car and I think, on the timesheets I was quick in those first two days, but we knew that I was still finding my feet. "So I think they've followed my progress in the last two weeks and for that I think they're quite happy to see the evolution over a small period of time so we'll keep going and hopefully it leads to bigger and better things."
