Revealed: FIA publishes striking first Formula E Gen4 drawings

Formula E's fourth era will be introduced at the end of 2026, with the first drawings of its next car having been revealed by the FIA.

Following last week's meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC), the first drawings of Formula E's Gen4 car were released in the technical regulations. 

The full technical regulations spanning 72 pages were approved by the WMSC and publicly published by the FIA on its website, with the final pages including drawings of the underside of the car and the survival cell.

Dimensions were included, with it being confirmed that the introduction of the Gen4 in Season 13 (2026/27) will see FE with a wider and longer car than the current Gen3 Evo. 

Crucially, the all-electric series will return to a full rear wing, a design feature the championship has not included since Gen1.

Gen4 was recently described by Envision's Sebastien Buemi as about "ultimate performance" to RacingNews365, with it being FE's biggest step yet.

In a first for the category, the Gen4 will feature two different aerodynamic configurations (low and high), opening the door to more strategic variety by the teams when it comes to car set up. 

It will also feature permanent all-wheel drive, a feature only currently available during attack mode or during the duel stage of qualifying where 350 kW is used. 

On the topic of power, the Gen4 has a power output of 600 kW, almost double the current maximum output of 350 kW. It is a major step towards F1's level of power, with 600 kW being the equivalent of 804 bhp – just 200 bhp lower than the pinnacle of motorsport.

According to RACER, the car has already reached 210 mph in private testing at the Jarama Circuit in Madrid, where it has been driven by former F1 test driver James Rossiter. Simulations of Monaco lap times have also been between 1m 15 and 1m 18, according to Buemi.

Major dimensions change

The chassis will still be produced by Spark, whilst the battery will be supplied by Podium Advanced Technologies. Compared to the current Gen3 Evo, the battery's maximum usable energy in a race will increase from 38.5 kWh to 55 kWh. 

For Gen4, Bridgestone has replaced Hankook as the sole tyre supplier, with two compounds being developed – one purposefully for very wet conditions. The tyres being developed have a diameter of 18 inches, with the width to increase also on both axles. 

Despite being a spec series, the manufacturers will have more creative freedom for Gen4 in being allowed to develop several components, such as the active differentials, for example. 

PitBoost also features in the Gen4 technical regulations, with the amount of energy of the fast charge to increase from 3.85 kWh to 4.05 kWh. 

Perhaps the biggest change is the size of the Gen4 compared to the Gen3 Evo, with it to be 52 cm longer at 5.54 metres. The width is also increasing by roughly 30 cm to 180 cm. 

It will also be significantly heavy, the Gen4 will weigh 1012 kg in Season 13 – 150 kg heavier than the current car this campaign.
