Johnny Herbert believes Red Bull has made the wrong call in promoting Liam Lawson over Yuki Tsunoda for 2025.
Kiwi Lawson was announced as stepping up to partner Max Verstappen for next season after Sergio Perez was dropped following a poor season in 2024.
RB team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was also touted as a possibility, but was over-looked for the seat, and instead will remain at the junior team for a fifth term, as Lawson becomes the least-experienced driver promoted to Red Bull's senior team in terms of grands prix started with just 11 to his name.
However, three-time grand prix winner Herbert believes the wrong decision has been made by the Milton Keynes-based team.
"The one who has impressed me the most is Yuki," he told Plejmo.com.
"I like his feistiness; he’s not afraid to shout. I like his qualifying, where he has the edge is his strong head.
"He is not scared to say things either about his team or the other drivers around him. You need that type of mentality to go up against the best.
"Would he beat Max? I am not sure but I think it would be close. That is what Red Bull needs."
