Ford's history in Formula One

The Ford Motor Company is a multinational automobile manufacturing company based in the United States. Ford is known for its involvement in motorsports, where it had significant influence with Cosworth, beginning in 1966 and ending in 2004. The Ford-badged Cosworth DFV became one of the most successful engines in Formula 1 history. After its introduction, the engine supplied nearly all Formula 1 teams except the major constructors from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.

Ford-Cosworth in F1

The Ford-Cosworth era came to an end in the mid-1980s, when turbocharged cars proved to be a more successful option over the normally-aspirated Cosworth engines. However, Ford-Cosworth returned to prominence in 1989, when turbo engines were banned in Formula 1 and again supplied many of the teams. Ford-Cosworth's power began to wane again in the mid-1990s, however, as more engine suppliers appeared on the grid.

Verstappen and Ford

For the Verstappen family, Ford is not an unfamiliar partner. Jos Verstappen drove a Ford-Cosworth engine during his debut year in Formula 1 at Benetton and also during his time at Simtek, Tyrrell, Stewart.

Ford quits Formula One

In 2000, Ford entered the Formula 1 grid as a team through subsidiary Jaguar, following Ford's acquisition of the Stewart team. The Jaguar team raced until 2004, when the auto giant decided to withdraw from the sport after 38 years.

Cosworth remained active as an engine supplier in Formula 1, but no longer received support from Ford.

Ford returns to Formula 1 as Red Bull's engine supplier

Starting in 2026, Red Bull will race with a Red Bull-Ford engine. With the announcement of the partnership in January 2023, Ford and Red Bull will work intensively together on the new engine ahead of the new regulations that will come into effect in 2026. The hybrid part of the engine will become even more important and racing will be with 100% renewable fuel.

Red Bull Racing's current engine, which was actually developed by Honda, will be retained and further developed in the coming years. Sister team AlphaTauri is also switching to the Red Bull-Ford engine in 2026. The partnership between Red Bull Racing and Ford brings many expectations, given Ford's history as a well-known name in motorsports, and its commitment to sustainability with a focus on hybrid technology and sustainable fuel. Fans and drivers are eagerly awaiting Red Bull-Ford's new engine.
