Ralf Schumacher, the former F1 driver and younger brother of seven-time F1 champion Michael, has revealed on Instagram he is in a relationship with a man.

Schumacher shared on Instagram a photo of him and his partner, arm in arm, looking at the setting sun. The caption reads: "The most beautiful thing in life is when you have the right partner by your side, with whom you can share everything."

Schumacher is the first F1 driver to confirm he is in a same-sex relationship, which has seen him receive significant support from friends and family, and within F1.

For several years the sport has been pushing for greater inclusivity and diversity for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Close friend and actress Carmen Geiss remarked that the former Toyota driver's post was liberating. She said she had discussed with him the possibility of coming out ahead of his Instagram post.

"It was a courageous decision that he thought long and hard about and is now taking with pride and confidence," commented Geiss.

"His coming out is not only a personal triumph but also a sign that he is finally able to live and love his true identity without fear or shame."

Schumacher's son, David, was also quick to comment and praise his father's decision.

"I'm very happy that you finally found someone with whom you really feel very comfortable and safe," commented the ADAC GT Masters driver.

"Whether it is a man or a woman, I am 100% behind you dad and wish you all the best. Congratulations."

Ralf Schumacher was active in F1 from 1997 through 2007. He won six grands prix and now works as an F1 analyst for German television.
