The last major revamp to the Formula 1 points system came ahead of the 2010 season, when the previous format used between 2003-2009 was dumped.
New for that year was an increase in the points-paying positions from the top eight to the top 10, with an increased prize on offer.
The 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 system was only tweaked in 2019 with the addition of a bonus point for the fastest lap in the race, providing the driver who set it finished in the top 10.
At the start of the 2024 season, however, the grid has clearly split into two fields of five teams each, with Red Bull, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin all expected to fill the points if a race goes as expected.
This means Alpine, Williams, RB, Stake and Haas could put together a fine grand prix weekend, but come home 11th and receive no points. A DNF for one of the top five and a bit of luck, however, could mean that a rival snatches a precious point that could be worth millions in prize money.
One fix to this has been the idea of increasing the points-paying positions to give drivers more opportunities to score, with Haas' Nico Hulkenberg open to the idea.
