Oscar Piastri has been backed by former F1 driver Johnny Herbert to challenge for the drivers' title in 2025.
The Australian will enter his third campaign in the sport, enjoying a strong 2024 season during which he helped McLaren seal its first constructors' championship in 26 years.
Piastri, as well as team-mate Lando Norris, won his first grand prix this year.
However, both drivers have set their sights on the next step as they look to claim their own title glory in 2025.
Herbert asserted Piastri has the right frame of mind to contend for the title throughout the upcoming season.
“Piastri has the right attitude,” Herbert told Coin Poker.
“It is about him and he doesn’t care about anyone else. That is what he has to take into a fresh season in which McLaren will start as favourites.
“He has Mark Webber as his manager. Oscar knows what he needs to do. If he comes out of the blocks dominating then he will be in a very good place but I don’t think Lando is going to allow that.
“Lando has been magnificent in his qualifying performances and has still raced brilliantly.”
McLaren has been tipped to start the new season at the front of the field having enjoyed a strong conclusion to the 2024 campaign.
Should both of its drivers be in contention for the title, Herbert stated both Norris and Piastri will benefit one another in competition.
“The competition will push the pair of them,” he said. “I like Oscar’s strong mindset.
“The next big head-to-head next season is going to be between Oscar and Lando! McLaren will dominate ahead of Red Bull, then Ferrari and Mercedes.”
