Pessimistic McLaren require 'aggressive' developments to MCL60

McLaren believe that they will need to follow an 'aggressive' development path amid expectations of a slow start in the F1 season opener in Bahrain.

McLaren have conceded that they will need to make 'aggressive' development choices in order to make up for their anticipated slow start to the F1 season. Throughout preseason and testing, the Woking team have been quick to lower expectations about the initial pace of the MCL60. Despite the pace of all teams still being partly-unknown until the official Bahrain GP weekend, McLaren appeared to struggle for pace or handling consistency during the three-day test. Speaking during the pre-season test, newly-appointed Team Principal Andrea Stella conceded that the team will need to make bold design developments in order to fulfil their 2023 target of P4 in the Constructors' Championship.

"I think being aggressive is required," Stella told media, including RacingNews365.com . "I think [being aggressive] can be intended, from a timeline point of view, you want to bring these upgrades as soon as possible, and also from a development rate point of view. "We see that the game is incredibly competitive. I think Formula 1 gets more and more competitive every year in terms of how many teams now have the facilities, the equipment, the people to develop cars at a very high rate. "If we want to meet our objective of being a top four car over the course of the season, we have to out-develop our competitors, we do have to be aggressive."
