Sergio Perez is confident that he can be a World Champion in Formula 1 – and that he can beat teammate Max Verstappen to achieve this. With the 2022 season now past the halfway mark, Perez currently sits P3 in the standings, 85 points away from Verstappen at the top. However, this has not dented the Mexican's hopes of taking a title. When asked if he can become World Champion, Perez told German publication Sport Bild : "Definitely! If everything is right and I drive perfectly, I can beat anyone in Formula 1."
Perez admits consistency is key in battle against Verstappen
Perez includes Verstappen as one of the drivers he can beat, though he admits that such is the Dutchman's quality that he needs to be consistent in order to outperform him. "Max too. I've already shown that several times this season," Perez said. "But unfortunately it won't be a foregone conclusion. Max has incredible quality, is extremely mature for his age and has a very good feeling for the car. "That's why the question is not whether I can beat him on a weekend, but how many races I can finish ahead of him. It's about consistency. That's what makes a champion." Perez feels that his extensive experience within the sport is a valuable asset in this regard. "I've experienced just about everything in Formula 1," the three-time race winner explained. "Then there's the hard work with the team and the energy I put into strength training, among other things. I'm in top shape. "I draw a lot of self-confidence from these things. That's why I have no doubt that I can become champion."
Perez praises Red Bull as "best team in the world"
With Red Bull having built a substantial 97-point advantage over Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship, Perez believes that he is in the right place to contend for a championship. "I'm with the best team in the world," Perez commented. "The amount of knowledge and talent that comes together here is unbelievable. With Max, I have an absolute world-class driver as my teammate. We get on well and work together to make Red Bull a success. "But of course we are also competitors. Everyone wants to be the best. We always push each other to the next level. To compete against Max is a big challenge."
