Sergio Perez has retired on the opening lap of the Mexico City Grand Prix, after making contact with Charles Leclerc at the first corner.

The Red Bull driver utilised the slipstream into Turn 1 and was alongside Leclerc and team-mate Max Verstappen, before he turned into the corner and made contact with the Ferrari.

That caused his car to pitch into the air, causing damage to his floor and sidepod as he skidded off into the run off zone.

Perez returned back to the pits and the team elected to pull the car back into the garage, where checks confirmed that he could not continue as Verstappen continued to lead with Leclerc in second, following part of his broken front-wing dislodging itself, prompting a brief Virtual Safety Car.
