Adrian Newey has been tipped to restore Ferrari to championship-winning ways by former Williams driver Riccardo Patrese.
Patrese and Newey worked together at Williams in the early 1990s, with the Italian picking up four of his six wins with the team as team-mate to Nigel Mansell.
Newey has reportedly told Red Bull of his desire to leave Red Bull after 19 years, but no official confirmation has been made, with Ferrari tipped as a likely destination.
The Scuderia has made numerous attempts to lure Newey to Italy, as it seeks a first Drivers' championship since Kimi Raikkonen's 2007 success, but to no avail, although Patrese is keen to see the move.
"He is in a class of one as an engineer, and if he comes, only one will win," Patrese told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"We just need to understand if he is really going to come. I know him personally very well, we are friends from my time at Williams, and I know he loves his home in Britain very much.
"That's why I don't know if he would leave Red Bull and go to Ferrari.
"I would be content if he does go to Ferrari, though, because I can then see him more often in Italy - and where he goes, that team wins."
