Pascal Wehrlein steals Formula E title lead as Mitch Evans suffers major blow

Pascal Wehrlein converted pole position into victory in the opening race of Formula E's season-ending London E-Prix, to steal the lead of the drivers' title with a round remaining. 

The German effectively led the entire race with a comfortable margin, as a result of Porsche teammate Nico Müller having held up the pack behind in the first half of the race. 

It was Mitch Evans who was directly behind Müller, before opting to take Pit Boost at the end of Lap 16 in an attempt to undercut both Porsches. 

Unfortunately, a full course yellow caused by Lucas di Grassi crashing marked the latest major title blow for Evans, as it gave Wehrlein and several others a chance to take their Pit Boost and lose less time. 

Wehrlein's lead extended considerable due to this, while Evans and Müller who pitted a lap after the Jaguar fell towards the foot of the top 10. 

Championship leader going into the race Jake Dennis worked through from fifth to second, meaning Wehrlein has a five-point advantage over the Briton going into Sunday's finale. 

A messy final few laps saw Antonio Felix da Costa complete the podium, ahead of Sebastien Buemi and Taylor Barnard. 

Evans had no option but to settle for eighth, putting him 21 points adrift of Wehrlein heading into the finale at the ExCeL Centre. 

It means just Wehrlein, Dennis and Evans can still win the world championship.
