Oscar Piastri has revealed what he focused on ahead of the current campaign, although he is still "digging" to make further progress.
In his third season in Formula 1, Piastri has made an exceptional start, winning four of the opening six races. The Australian driver currently leads the F1 drivers' title by 16 points ahead of McLaren team-mate Lando Norris.
Piastri was overlooked by many during pre-season, with Norris initially declared the favourite for the current season, however, it has been the opposite.
Except for his podium-costing trip to the grass in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Piastri is yet to make a mistake since. His performances have been formidable, leaving the likes of Norris and reigning world champion Max Verstappen chasing.
In his eyes, the 24-year-old has made progress in every area, although his main focus following last season was to become quicker over a single lap. He feels that has been achieved, despite still having only claimed two pole positions this year.
"I think the car is an evolution from what we had last year," Piastri told select media in Miami, including RacingNews365. "There are some things that are different, but there are a lot of things that still do the same thing as last season.
"I think, from my side, I feel like I have taken a step forward across the board. I think there hasn't been one specific thing that I tried to work on from last year, it's just been trying to find those last hundredths of a second wherever you can.
"And I think at the moment, that's been making the difference. I've still lost out on a few poles by a few hundredths of a second. I've still got some more digging to do, but I think that's been the big difference for me so far. There are still some things we're trying to iron out as a team.
"With the car we've got, it's clearly very quick, but it's not always the easiest to get the pace out of. But I think, yeah, that was the case sometimes last year."
