Mercedes after remarkable Hamilton pole: Changing the game since 1985

It was another standout day in the career of Lewis Hamilton as the Brit became the first F1 driver to reach the century mark when it comes to pole positions. Mercedes were quick to highlight the achievement on their Twitter account.

Lewis Hamilton added another sensational accomplishment to his remarkable career on Saturday, claiming his 100th pole in style at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Brit set a lap time of 1:16.741 during his first run in Q3, a mark that was good enough to get the better of championship rival Max Verstappen. With all eyes glued on the final minutes of the session, neither driver could improve their time, allowing Hamilton to become the first driver to hit the century mark when it comes to pole positions. Mercedes wasted no time in praising the Brit, posting a retro-themed video on their Twitter account. The video ends by focusing in on Hamilton's score of 100 poles, which now puts him 32 clear of Michael Schumacher.

Toto Wolff joined in as well, joking that the lap that saw Hamilton claim pole was just okay. "I'm not one for statistics but 100 pole positions is a pretty impressive milestone! I told Lewis on the radio that it was quite an okay lap, but of course it was a little bit more than that," Wolff said via a Mercedes press release. Meanwhile Andrew Shovlin stated the entire Mercedes team is proud of what Lewis has achieved. "Well done to Lewis on his 100th pole position - it's a phenomenal achievement and the whole team is proud of him, and proud to have played a part in him reaching this milestone," said Shovlin.

Hamilton thanks entire Mercedes team

Hamilton took time to celebrate his achievement as well, thanking those at the Mercedes factory that have helped him reach this incredible milestone. "100 POLES! I can’t even begin to describe how this feels," read a post on Hamilton's Instagram account. "I can’t thank the team and everyone back at the factory enough for everything they’ve done to help us secure this incredible milestone. I feel so humbled and very grateful. "This feels like my first win all over again. Thank you all for your love and positivity. The journey doesn’t end here, we’ve still go lots more to do."
