McLaren takes legal action against IndyCar driver

The latest in the contract dispute between McLaren and IndyCar star Alex Palou.

McLaren has taken the first step in the legal process against Alex Palou, following a dispute over his IndyCar contract with the team in 2024. Palou signed a one-year deal to remain with Ganassi in 2023, with him set to switch teams to McLaren at the end of the season. This has since been disputed by Ganassi, criticising the team management and accused McLaren of "playing the victim" throughout the whole saga. The contract with Ganassi reportedly stipulated a non-complete clause that exempts Palou from signing any new contract before September 1st. McLaren CEO Zak Brown responded by highlighting the significant investment the team has already made in Palou, including giving him a number of test sessions in their older F1 cars and a run during FP1 in Austin at last years US Grand Prix. McLaren will reportedly not try to hold on to Palou as their driver in IndyCar, after he is believed to have signed a multi-year extension with Ganassi which keeps him at the team for the foreseeable. The Spanish driver will be the subject of legal action from McLaren in the United Kingdom, reportedly regarding the sums of payments made in advance for his 2024 contract. Brown told Racer : "We made a significant investment in Alex Palou, looking forward to racing with him in 2024. We’re placing our trust in the legal system to resolve this matter and will keep our comments at that. “As a team, we’re turning our focus to the final races this season and on our plans for 2024, which we’ll announce once we’re ready.”
