Both McLarens crashed out on the opening lap of the United States Grand Prix Sprint, in a dramatic first turn.
Max Verstappen made an exceptional start from pole and was unchallenged into the first corner, while chaos unfolded behind at the Circuit of the Americas.
Lando Norris was on the inside going into the first corner, to which Oscar Piastri attempted a switch back.
However, as the championship leader cut back, contact was made with Nico Hulkenberg on the inside. As a result of the contact between Hulkenberg and Piastri, the latter was sent into Norris.
Norris spun, while Piastri pulled off the circuit further around the lap due to significant suspension damage. It was a simple case of three-into-one did not go, with the stewards having taken no further action.
Hulkenberg managed to continue, while both McLarens and Fernando Alonso retired – Alonso was hit after being on the inside of the Stake driver.
With Verstappen leading, the Dutchman can reduce his title deficit to 55 points.
