Marko questions Mercedes' 2023 recovery hopes: They've lost their way

Helmut Marko predicts that rivals Mercedes will struggle to develop their way towards the front of the grid this season.

Red Bull's Motorsport Advisor Helmut Marko believes Mercedes will struggle to find any solutions in time to be competitive in 2023. Red Bull enjoyed one of their most comprehensive performances of the new ground effect era by dominating the Bahrain Grand Prix. Former rivals Mercedes were over 50 seconds adrift of the reigning Constructors' Champions, and conceded that they are very likely to change their car design concept as a result. Marko commented on Mercedes' plight, and said that the cost cap hurdle might limit how many solutions Mercedes can trial in 2023. "Mercedes has more than one obstacle, that's clear," Marko told OE24 . "They have not made any progress compared to last season. If you look at the gaps, it was even a step backwards. "They seem to have lost their way somewhere. I am curious to see what they will do now. Because of the cost cap, it's such a problem to develop the car routinely. "How do you put together a completely new car? Unless they make the golden shot, which I wouldn't assume after recent experiences."
