Marko hangs Red Bull future on Verstappen after threat of suspension

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has signalled Max Verstappen's involvement in F1 is keeping him attached to the Milton Keynes-based squad.

Marko shares a strong relationship with Verstappen, with the latter declaring earlier this year that he holds loyalty towards the Austrian when he was facing a suspension from the team.

Marko was subject to a team investigation over accusations he was leaking information to the media and acknowledged that he could be sidelined shortly after the start of the season.

"That was certainly not a fun time, during which a lot of rumours circulated,” Marko reflected to motorsport-magazin. 

“Oliver Mintzlaff came to Saudi Arabia, where we had a long and good conversation. 

“A second top executive from Red Bull, Franz Watzlawick, was also there and we had a good conversation with him as well.

"And yes, that suspension was one of the many issues at play in the transition to a new management after the death of Dietrich Mateschitz, with the Thai side of the company now also exerting considerably more influence.”

Verstappen key to Marko commitment

Verstappen's future at Red Bull was thrown into question during the early-season turmoil that occurred at the squad, with team principal Christian Horner investigated after allegations made by an employee.

Mercedes has been publicly pursuing Verstappen's signature this year despite the three-time world champion having a contract in place until 2028 - however it is believed exit clauses exist in his deal.

The Dutchman has also signalled on multiple occasions that he will not have an extended F1 career as he looks to partake in various racing projects before retiring.

Marko, at 81 years of age, highlighted his connection with Verstappen as a key reason behind his decision to remain involved in the sport. 

“I am independent,” he stated. “I don't need this job. 

“My motivation is my passion, my enthusiasm for the sport and, of course, the strong bond with Max Verstappen and the Verstappens in general.

“It was clear to me that if I stayed, I would not be hindered or limited in any way, so I can always do what is best for Max.”
