Red Bull F1 team advisor Dr.Helmut Marko has claimed the decision by Red Bull to take control of the Honda power units and form the Red Bull Powertrain company is a bold move by the Austrian company. Following the decision by Honda to pull out of the sport at the end of 2021, Red Bull were banking on a proposed engine freeze being implemented from 2022 onwards. Now that the decision has been made, the team were swift in announcing their plans for the future. "The establishment of Red Bull Powertrains Limited is a bold move by Red Bull but it is one we have made after careful and detailed consideration," Marko said in a statement issued by Red Bull. "We have been discussing this topic with Honda for a long time and after the decision by the FIA to halt engine development from 2022, we were finally able to reach an agreement on the use of Honda's hybrid power units. "We are grateful for Honda’s collaboration in this regard and for helping to ensure that both Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri continue to have competitive power units. "We are aware of the huge commitment required but we believe the creation of this new company is the most competitive option for both teams.”
