Liam Lawson has voiced his fury following an "unacceptable" incident in the opening stages of the Mexico City Grand Prix, which saw the Racing Bulls driver almost hit an F1 marshal.

The New Zealander was forced to pit at the end of the opening lap after a collision with Williams' Carlos Sainz at the first corner, breaking his front-wing.

Lawson rejoined in last and comfortably adrift of the field, while a yellow flag flew in the first sector for the debris to be retrieved.

However, as he entered Turn 1, two marshals were seen running across the circuit, resulting in a shocking near-miss between one of the marshals and Lawson's car.

The 23-year-old immediately voiced his shock over the radio, before soon retiring from the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Asked about the incident with the two marshals, Lawson told select media including RacingNews365: "Yeah, I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"I boxed, came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn 1, and there was two dudes just running across the track. I nearly had one of them.

"Honestly, it was so dangerous. Obviously, there's been a miscommunication somewhere, but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past, so it's pretty unacceptable."

Following the incident, Lawson confirmed that Racing Bulls will request an explanation from the FIA for why two marshals were running across the circuit, in what could have been a deadly accident.

Discussing if the team will request an explanation from the FIA, Lawson replied: "Yeah, for sure. We obviously can't understand how on a live track, the marshals can be allowed to just run across the track like that.

"So yeah, I have no idea why, but I'm sure we'll get some explanation, but it really can't happen again."
