Liam Lawson has revealed he didn't get a call from Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, stating the Austrian only gets in touch after the “bad” races.
Lawson enjoyed a career-best result in Baku two weeks ago, crossing the line in fifth place after starting from third.
The strong showing came amid uncertainty over Lawson's F1 future within the Red Bull programme, with the team yet to confirm its second seat alongside Max Verstappen as well as the two Racing Bulls drives.
Lawson acknowledged his necessity to show Red Bull and Marko he can perform to retain his spot on the grid, but admitted his display in Baku wasn't met with a Marko phone call.
“Normally the phone calls are after the bad ones, so I haven’t heard much,” Lawson told media including RacingNews365, generating a chorus of laughter.
“It's clear for all of us. We’ve obviously done this a long time and we're well aware that we need to have good performances to stay in the sport.
“That’s honestly what I'm focused on at the moment. Baku was great, but obviously we need more of that going through the next few races.”
While Lawson enters the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix in high spirits after his Baku outing, the New Zealander understands how quickly his fortunes can change.
“It’s great to have a result like that,” he said. “But at the same time as much as you can say that you have momentum, it can change very quickly.
“It’s really important to just stay grounded with with with these results and know that even though Baku was great, it doesn't mean that it just automatically translates through to the rest of the year.
“We have things that we've found in the car and personally, that have made me a lot more comfortable.
“That’s the stuff we're focused on and trying to improve that to make it as easy as possible for me and obviously pushing to have more results like that.”
