Lewis Hamilton has received a 10-second time penalty in the Mexico City Grand Prix, after leaving the circuit and gaining an advantage while fighting Max Verstappen.
The seven-time world champion started in third and remained there across the opening laps, before being involved in a battle for position with Verstappen.
On lap eight, Verstappen dived down the inside of Hamilton at the first corner, forcing the Briton wide. As Hamilton rejoined at Turn 2, Verstappen was forced to cut across Turn 3.
It all resulted in drama at Turn 4, where Hamilton tried to go around the outside of his 2021 rival. In doing so, Hamilton locked up and went off the circuit.
In rejoining the track, Hamilton emerged comfortably ahead of Verstappen, resulting in the heavy punishment after gaining a position/advantage off the circuit.
As of lap 18, Hamilton sits in third and five seconds ahead of Haas' Oliver Bearman; Lando Norris comfortably leads at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
