Landmark Ayrton Senna anniversary celebrated by iconic one-off

Ayrton Senna claimed the first of his 41 grand prix victories in the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix, held on April 21st, 1985.

Portuguese football club Estoril have celebrated the 40th anniversary of Ayrton Senna's maiden grand prix win with a special one-off kit.

Senna joined Lotus ahead of the 1985 season after a strong debut campaign with Toleman in '84, and took the first of 65 pole positions in round two at Estoril for the Portuguese Grand Prix.

In the race, held in horrendous conditions, Senna lapped all but the second-placed driver Michele Alboreto, as he claimed the first of 41 grand prix victories.

The 40th anniversary of the race was on April 21st, with top-flight Premieria Liga side Estoril sporting a Senna-inspired one-off kit for the match with Sporting Braga on Saturday 19th April.

As seen below, the kit made use of Senna's iconic helmet colours, and also the black of John Player Special, the title sponsor of the Lotus team.

Unfortunately, mid-table Estoril lost 0-2 to Braga, who sit third.

Senna would spend three seasons with Lotus, claiming a total of six wins for the team before taking the Honda engines with him to McLaren for 1988 - the year he won the first of his three world titles.
