Colton Herta suffered a collision with the barrier at Turn 1 midway through the Indianapolis 500, all but ending his hopes of winning the race.
Herta was running in second place at the time and in close pursuit of the race leader Scott McLaughlin.
The American driver managed to avoid significant damage to his car, however his front wing crunched against the barrier before he came to a stop.
Herta walked away from the incident unscathed and apologised to his team over the radio.
The Andretti driver entered the Indy 500 fourth in the drivers' standings and will not better his best result of eighth at the famous race.
Despite the crash, Herta stepped back in the car to resume the race after it returned to the pit lane.
